How Shorts Thumbnails Work
A YouTube Short is a vertical 9:16 video, but YouTube still generates the same horizontal thumbnail files (default, mqdefault, hqdefault, sddefault, maxresdefault) for it, keyed to the video ID. So even though the Short plays full-screen vertical, its downloadable thumbnail is the standard 16:9 cover. If the creator did not upload a custom thumbnail, YouTube uses a frame from the Short — usually the first frame — as the cover image.
Getting the Right Shorts URL
Shorts URLs look like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID. You can also paste a normal watch URL (youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID) for the same Short, or just the raw 11-character video ID — the tool extracts the ID from any of these formats. On mobile, use the Short's Share button and 'Copy link' to grab the correct URL.
Why Download a Shorts Thumbnail
Shorts move fast, and the cover image is a big part of why a Short gets the first tap in the feed. Downloading covers from top-performing Shorts in your niche lets you reverse-engineer what works: bold faces, big text, high contrast, and a clear hook. It is also useful for archiving your own Shorts covers so you can repurpose them across platforms or recap roundups.
